TARDISCraft - A Brief Explanation of Fabrication...

A very brief overview of the TARDIS Crafting System...

This weeks development has focused entirely on TARDISCraft, our inbuild nickname for the ships Fabrication crafting system.

The TARDIS is a vehicle, and with the ownership of a vehicle comes the responsibility of making sure it's running up to standards. To do this, damaged core components must be repaired, and some vital systems must be upgraded to survive the eventual onslaught of rigorous and frequent travel through the Space Time Vortex and beyond.

With that in mind, we overhauled the previous crafting system to bring this new level of interaction to the foreground.

Fabrication allows you to craft Schematics or Components in FWV with ease. Schematics allow you to build new items, from the reknown Sonic Screwdriver to more adventurous devices such as the Artron Energy Converter.
They can obtained either by stumbling across them through your travels, purchased from the Galactic Market or even found hidden down the backs of furniture (clue...?).
At the simple cost of a little Artron Energy (the Galactic currency for the mod and all around life-force of the Whoniverse) and the odd component, Schematics of new and unique items for use in your adventures can be conjured over a short period of time from the TARDIS console.

Creepy snowmen are creepy! :)

That said, the new TARDIS control room suits his new personality shift, but it's not as much *fun* as the one he's been using up until now. I don't think the mod is in any danger of being upstaged by the new look. It looks like a kind of throwback, actually, to previous series. Should an alternate control room add-on be contemplated, I don't imagine it would be as hard to mod as the organic looks of the previous control centers.

This "new" console room does seem to lack the wackiness of Doctor Who that we all know and love, but it does look like a shift that didn't ruin the experience. In my opinion, the room not only embodies the alien nature of the Eleventh Doctor, although the previous did that splendidly, but also emphasizes a darker context that symbolizes the loss he suffered. In terms of modeling the overall size of the console would seem to make it easier to manage, but the intricate animations that make up the ceiling would be a hardy feat to replicate. All of these thoughts are based solely on my own perspective, and I don't think that Fallout Who should pursue such an undertaking in New Vegas, unless they choose to do so. Although.. There is Fallout 4 that could be released in the coming years.. *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*

In terms of the "lore", I'd have to assume the Doctor changed the console room willingly for no reason other than to have a change of scenery after his losses. Production wise, it probably is just meant to be a throwback to the old series console rooms... but I still like the idea that it somehow symbolizes him.

I don't like the console room as much as the previous (series 5-7.5), but I'm sure that'll start to change as we see more of it. For now, there hasn't been too much of a focus on the actual console at all (different controls, how things move, where they're placed, etc.) so I'm not seeing using it in the mod as very feasible for a while. That, and while modeling it would probably be easier than the current version we're doing, adding a second version of every control (when we don't know needed details about them in the first place) is a pretty big undertaking and at that point we'd be making up most of the details. Still, a patch later on could potentially add it as an option if we go that path.

also from what I saw the animation up top would be easy to replicate but gods help us all if I tried to copy all that Gallifreyan script onto it, like, ever.

Spyduck said...

btw, irrelevant to all that, but I'm pretty sure the captcha I see after refreshing this page begins with New Series Dalek writing. It even looks like a closeup screenshot from their name plates.

Cwang92 said...

I especially dislike how small and claustrophobic the new console seems, but I'm sure the payoff will be that the production team will have more leg-room to showcase more areas of the TARDIS, which has been a dream of mine since the new era..

Cwang92 said...

Oh and quick question..did anyone else notice how old and beat up the TARDIS seemed in The Snowmen? Was that just a new exterior look, or was that because of the damage from The Angels Take Manhattan?
